What can our oral health tell us about the health of the body as a whole? And what role can it play in healthy ageing and longevity?

These are some of the key questions Dr. Gregor Hočevar will address at this year’s Vikend ZATE.

The 13th Vikend ZATE, organized by Alenka Ružič Jovović, will take place from 2 to 4 October 2026 at Hotel Bellevue in Mali Lošinj, Croatia. The event brings together movement, expert talks, relaxation and activities focused on health and wellbeing. Among this year’s speakers is Dr. Gregor Hočevar, DMD, MSc, who will explore oral health from a broader, more holistic perspective.

The mouth as a mirror of health

Dr. Hočevar’s talk, titled “The mouth as a mirror of health – The path to longevity begins in the mouth,” will focus on the close relationship between oral health and overall health.

The mouth is much more than a separate part of the body that requires regular dental care. The condition of the teeth, gums and surrounding tissues can be connected to processes taking place throughout the body. This makes it important to look beyond individual dental problems and consider the patient as a whole.

During his presentation, Dr. Hočevar will discuss chronic infections and inflammation in the oral cavity, as well as the role of biocompatible materials in modern dentistry. He will also introduce the principles of biological dentistry and explain how a more comprehensive approach can complement conventional dental care.

Why oral health matters for longevity

Longevity is increasingly understood as more than simply living longer. It is also about maintaining health, vitality and quality of life as we age. This broader perspective makes oral health an important part of the conversation.

Dr. Hočevar will explore how the condition of the oral cavity can be connected to the body’s overall balance and why prevention and early attention to oral health matter. His approach is rooted in biological dentistry, which considers oral health in the context of the patient’s overall wellbeing.

This perspective is also reflected in Dr. Hočevar’s clinical work, professional education and international lectures, where he focuses on advancing a more comprehensive understanding of modern dentistry.
